As I sat outside yesterday

enjoying an early afternoon break

I soaked up the noise of the city

A bird in the tree across the street was chirping and singing away

replacing the noise of human chatter that I hear all day

3 crows were pulling away at the burlap wrapped around a shrub

I watched with a sense of awe

as a Robin hopped along the sidewalk

there was an absence of the brutal winter wind

High above me a flock of Geese were honking

with a heart filled with hope of warmer weather

I tilted my head to watch them fly by

They flew in a straight line

then rearranged into a small “v”

a sure sign of imminent Spring

Even the drone from the radio station

was being replaced with the sounds of birds

chirping birds and honking Geese all sound like Spring

I sat and watched as flock after flock

of Geese flew overhead

until I took a snow flake in the eye

OH WHATEVER!!!

Oh nasty snow

     why won’t you go

Oh winter weather

     warm would be better

Oh my fair Jay Feather

     we are separated by weather

In the freezer I have a bag of sand

GIVE ME A BREAK, I DON’T WANT TO USE IT ON THE ICY DRIVEWAY, IT’S BEACH SAND!!

What possesses a human being to allow another person to treat them poorly? Why would you not speak up for yourself? Why do some people think that they can treat others poorly?

My temporary work place is not a happy place. There is a real lack of respect for the employees. Somewhere back in the beginning the staff gave the manager permission to speak to them in whatever manner he sees fit. He sees fit to talk to them like their are beyond stupid and somewhat hearing impaired and like rubber door mats they just take it.

Apparently the manager was forewarned that if he did not treat me with respect I would simply walk out the door and return to my own lunchroom. My manager warned him, my manager’s manager warned him and he has responded properly. He knows that I will indeed walk, I would walk if I worked for him, there is always a job elsewhere.

Twice today “John” approached me and quietly asked me to “please” perform a task that is (apparently) part of my assigned duties. Three times today he yelled at the other 2 women to get something done. For a spell I felt bad that “John” treats me, a temporary employee, with the respect that he should be treating the women who can make or break him.

I am a firm believer in the philosophy that people will indeed treat you in whatever manner you allow them to. Where you draw the line should parallel the level of self respect you have for yourself or you negate the right to complain about the way people treat you. Respect can be demanded, whether or not you receive it is completely dependant on only you.

I’ve often wondered what goes into the development of an arrogant person. Is it a recessive gene that they’re born with? Is it because they truly believed what everyone was telling them as a child about how good they are? Perhaps it’s a simple case of over compensating, come across as a know it all so folks won’t discover that they know precious little. Or, is it because no one has ever said to them “you’re an idiot”?

I encountered 2 such people on 2 separate occasions in one day recently and I can honestly say that it was 2 too many. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’m all that and a bag of chips, I actively seek out new things to learn on a daily basis. I know I’m not done learning and I also know I’m not always smarter than a 5th grader. And yet an arrogant person assumes I’m an idiot and begins, in some fashion, to educate me.

How does a person convince themselves that they know absolutely everything about absolutely everything? Why do they assume that the people around them are idiots and it’s their job to set them right? I wonder if, when treated in the same fashion they automatically step back and view the incoming info as irrelevant? Maybe they need to have someone sit them down and tell them that they’re not all that. I suspect they would immediately define the person talking to them as an idiot, they are after all, all that, aren’t they?

I think if I encounter any more arrogant people in the very near future the outcome won’t be very encouraging, pleasant or loving. “Wow, you have a diploma for something, aren’t you special, I bow to your superiority”

But in face to face talks I try hard to listen

Filling them with hot air is a waste of our time

I’m too mentally lazy to dig through the crap

Stop humming and hawing to fill in the gap

I’ll give you a few seconds, maybe three

Staring at the floor or playing with your hands

Causes me to wan while you lament your demands

State the importance to make me see
